Sewage Treatment Plant

A Sewage Treatment Plant (pronunciation: /ˈsuːɪdʒ ˈtriːtmənt plænt/) is a facility designed to receive the waste from domestic, commercial and industrial sources and to remove materials that damage water quality and compromise public health and safety when discharged into water receiving systems.

Etymology

The term "Sewage Treatment Plant" is derived from the English words "sewage" meaning waste water and waste matter, "treatment" meaning the process of dealing with or controlling things, and "plant" referring to a place where an industrial or manufacturing process takes place.

Process

The process of a Sewage Treatment Plant involves three stages: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary treatment.

  • Primary Treatment: This involves the separation of macrobiotic solid matter from the sewage.
  • Secondary Treatment: This involves the removal of dissolved and suspended biological matter.
  • Tertiary Treatment: This involves the removal of any remaining suspended solids, more than 99 percent of bacteria, viruses and all of the phosphorus, and most of the nitrogen.

Related Terms

  • Effluent: Outflowing of water or gas from a natural body of water, or from a human-made structure.
  • Sludge: Semi-solid slurry that can be produced from a range of industrial processes, including water treatment, wastewater treatment and on-site sanitation systems.
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD): Amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period.
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): Test commonly used to indirectly measure the amount of organic compounds in water.
