Self-management (pronounced: self-man-uhj-muhnt) is a term used in healthcare to describe the actions taken by individuals to recognize, treat, and manage their own health, often in conjunction with the healthcare system. It is often used in the context of managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease.

Etymology

The term "self-management" is derived from the English words "self" and "management". "Self" originates from the Old English sēolf, meaning "one's own person", and "management" comes from the Italian maneggiare which means "to handle", especially "to control or direct".
