Satratoxin-H

Satratoxin-H (pronounced: sa-tra-tox-in H) is a mycotoxin produced by the fungus Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as black mold. It is a member of the trichothecene mycotoxin family, which are potent inhibitors of protein synthesis.

Etymology

The term "Satratoxin" is derived from the name of the fungus Stachybotrys atranone, which is known to produce this toxin. The "-H" denotes the specific variant of the toxin.

Production and Exposure

Satratoxin-H is produced by Stachybotrys chartarum when the fungus is growing and also after the fungus has died. Exposure to Satratoxin-H can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact with materials contaminated with Stachybotrys chartarum.

Health Effects

Exposure to Satratoxin-H can lead to a variety of health effects, including dermatitis, rhinitis, asthma, and pneumonitis. In severe cases, it can cause a fatal condition known as stachybotryotoxicosis.
