Richard K. Bernstein (pronunciation: /ˈbɜːrnstiːn/; etymology: German, meaning "amber") is an American doctor and an advocate for a low-carbohydrate diabetes diet to help achieve normal blood sugars for diabetics. Bernstein has Type 1 diabetes.

Early Life and Education

Bernstein was born in 1934. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 12. He studied at the University of Wisconsin, where he received a degree in commerce. Later, he earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at the age of 45.

Career

Bernstein is a licensed physician and an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is the author of six books about diabetes and normal blood sugars, including "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" and "The Diabetes Diet". Bernstein also runs a private practice in Mamaroneck, New York.

Medical Philosophy

Bernstein's approach to managing diabetes centers on a low-carbohydrate diet, coupled with frequent blood glucose monitoring and the use of insulin and other medications as needed. He argues that this approach can help diabetics achieve normal blood sugars, which he believes is key to preventing the long-term complications of diabetes.
