Protein supplement

A Protein supplement (/ˈproʊtiːn sʌplɪmənt/) is a product taken orally that contains proteins intended to supplement one's diet and is not intended to substitute for a meal. The amount of protein per product can vary greatly. Some supplements are marketed as high protein to attract athletes and bodybuilders. However, they are also used for people who are dieting to ensure they are getting enough protein.

Etymology

The term "Protein supplement" is derived from the Greek word "proteios", meaning "primary" or "in the lead". The term "supplement" comes from the Latin "supplementum", which means "something added to complete a thing, supply a deficiency, or reinforce or extend a whole".

Types of Protein Supplements

There are several types of protein supplements available, including:

  • Whey protein: Derived from milk during the process of making cheese. It contains all of the essential amino acids and is easily absorbed by the body.
  • Casein protein: Also derived from milk, but is absorbed more slowly than whey protein. It may help with muscle recovery after exercise.
  • Soy protein: A plant-based protein that contains all essential amino acids. It is a good option for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Pea protein: Another plant-based protein that is easily digestible and hypoallergenic.

Usage

Protein supplements are often used by athletes and bodybuilders to help repair and build muscle tissue after exercise. They can also be used by people who are dieting to ensure they are getting enough protein, as protein can help to keep you feeling full.

Side Effects

While protein supplements are generally considered safe for most people, they can cause side effects in some cases. These can include digestive issues, such as bloating and gas, and kidney damage in people with existing kidney problems.
