Peeling

Peeling (/ˈpiːlɪŋ/), also known as exfoliation in the field of dermatology, is a process where the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, is removed. This can occur naturally, such as when the skin heals from a sunburn, or it can be induced through various treatments.

Etymology

The term "peeling" originates from the Old English word "pilian", which means to strip off, peel or decorticate. The term was later adopted into Middle English as "pelen", and finally into Modern English as "peel".

Types of Peeling

There are three main types of peeling: superficial, medium, and deep peeling.

  • Superficial peeling only removes the outer layer of the skin, or the stratum corneum. This type of peeling is used to improve the appearance of the skin, reduce fine lines, and fade superficial skin discoloration.
  • Medium peeling penetrates the skin more deeply, reaching the papillary dermis. This type of peeling is used to treat moderate skin damage, including wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.
  • Deep peeling reaches the reticular dermis, the deepest layer of the skin. This type of peeling is used to treat severe skin damage, including deep wrinkles and precancerous growths.

Related Terms

  • Dermabrasion: A procedure that removes the top layers of the skin using a special instrument.
  • Microdermabrasion: A less invasive form of dermabrasion that only removes the surface layer of the skin.
