Patient transport (pronunciation: /ˈpeɪʃənt ˈtrænspɔːrt/) refers to the movement of patients in a medical setting. This can be within a healthcare facility, such as a hospital, or between healthcare facilities, such as from a hospital to a rehabilitation center.

Etymology

The term "patient transport" is derived from the Latin word "patiens", meaning "one who suffers", and the Old French word "transporter", meaning "to carry or move from one place to another".

Types of Patient Transport

There are several types of patient transport, including:

  • Non-emergency patient transport - This type of transport is used for patients who require medical supervision during transport, but whose condition is not considered an emergency.
  • Emergency patient transport - This type of transport is used for patients who require immediate medical attention and must be transported quickly to a healthcare facility.
  • Air patient transport - This type of transport is used for patients who need to be transported over long distances or over areas that are difficult to reach by ground transport.
  • Patient transfer - This refers to the movement of patients within a healthcare facility, such as from one department to another.
