Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome (pronounced op-so-KLON-us MY-o-KLON-us) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by an unsteady, trembling gait, myoclonus (brief, shock-like muscle spasms), and opsoclonus (irregular, rapid eye movements). Other symptoms may include difficulty speaking (dysarthria), and mental and behavioral changes.

Etymology

The term "opsoclonus" comes from the Greek words "opsi" meaning view and "klonos" meaning tumultuous movement. "Myoclonus" is derived from the Greek words "myo" meaning muscle and "klonos" meaning tumultuous movement. The syndrome is also known as Dancing Eyes-Dancing Feet Syndrome due to the characteristic eye and body movements associated with the condition.

Symptoms

The primary symptoms of Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome include opsoclonus, myoclonus, ataxia, and neuroblastoma. Opsoclonus, or rapid, irregular eye movements, is often the first symptom to appear. Myoclonus, or involuntary muscle twitching, typically follows. Ataxia, or lack of muscle control, can lead to difficulties with movement and balance. Neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that often occurs in conjunction with Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome, can cause additional symptoms.

Causes

Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome is often caused by a neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body. It can also be triggered by viral infections or by an autoimmune response.

Treatment

Treatment for Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition. This may include surgery to remove a neuroblastoma, or immunotherapy to manage an autoimmune response. Medications may also be used to manage symptoms.
