Oganesson (pronounced /ˌoʊɡəˈnɛsɒn/) is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Og and atomic number 118. It is named after the Russian physicist Yuri Oganessian, a pioneer in the field of superheavy atomic nuclei.

Etymology

The name "Oganesson" is derived from the surname of Russian physicist Yuri Oganessian, in recognition of his contributions to the field of nuclear chemistry. The "-on" ending is a standard suffix for elements in the noble gases group.

Properties

Oganesson is a member of the noble gases group and is expected to have properties similar to its lighter congeners; however, it may be significantly reactive due to relativistic effects.
