Occupational hygiene

Occupational hygiene (pronounced: /ɒkjʊˈpeɪʃənəl haɪˈdʒiːn/) is the discipline of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling health hazards in the working environment with the objective of protecting worker health and well-being and safeguarding the community at large.

Etymology

The term "occupational hygiene" is derived from the Greek word "hygieinos" which means healthy and the Latin word "occupatio" which means occupation or job.

  • Occupational disease: This is any chronic ailment that occurs as a result of work or occupational activity.
  • Occupational exposure limit: This is an upper limit on the acceptable concentration of a hazardous substance in workplace air for a particular material or class of materials.
