Northern Territory

Northern Territory (pronunciation: /ˈnɔːrðən ˈtɛrɪtəri/) is a federal territory of Australia, occupying much of the central and western part of the country. It is the third largest Australian federal division and the eleventh largest country subdivision in the world.

Etymology

The name "Northern Territory" has been in use since 1863, when it was adopted by the South Australian government, which administered the area at the time, to refer to the northern part of South Australia that was not yet settled. The term "Northern Territory" was previously used by colonial officials in Australia for lands to the north of the settled areas, but the modern territory was only formally established in 1911.
