Nasal meatus
Nasal Meatus
The Nasal Meatus (pronunciation: /ˈneɪzəl ˈmiːətəs/) is a term used in anatomy to describe a passage or channel in the nasal cavity.
Etymology
The term "Nasal Meatus" is derived from the Latin words "nasus" meaning nose and "meatus" meaning passage or channel.
Description
The Nasal Meatus is divided into three parts: the superior meatus, the middle meatus, and the inferior meatus. Each of these parts plays a crucial role in the process of respiration and olfaction.
The superior meatus is the highest of the three and is responsible for draining the posterior ethmoidal cells. The middle meatus is located in the middle and drains the frontal, maxillary, and anterior and middle ethmoidal sinuses. The inferior meatus, the lowest of the three, drains the nasolacrimal duct.
