Mulch

Mulch (/mʌltʃ/) is a layer of material applied to the surface of an area of soil. Its purpose is any or all of the following: to conserve moisture, to improve the fertility and health of the soil, to reduce weed growth, and to enhance the visual appeal of the area.

Etymology

The term "mulch" comes from the Middle English word "molsh" meaning soft, beginning to decay.

Types of Mulch

Mulch can be composed of a variety of decomposed organic or inorganic materials. Organic mulches include compost, straw, grass clippings, wood chips, and shredded bark. Inorganic mulches include gravel, pebbles, and landscape fabric.

Organic Mulch

Organic mulch is made up of once living material such as chopped leaves, straw, grass clippings, compost, wood chips, shredded bark, sawdust, pine needles, and even paper. Organic mulches decompose over time and contribute to soil health. This can be a significant advantage over inorganic mulches.

Inorganic Mulch

Inorganic mulch is made up of man-made materials or materials that don’t decompose, or do so very slowly. Examples include various types of stone, lava rock, pulverized rubber, fabric, plastic, and other materials.

Uses of Mulch

Mulch is used in agriculture and gardening to protect the soil and plant roots from the elements, to provide nutrients, and to prevent weed growth. It can also be used to improve the aesthetics of a landscape.
