Mount Everest

Mount Everest (pronunciation: /ˈɛvərɛst/), also known in Nepal as Sagarmatha (सगरमाथा) and in Tibet as Chomolungma (ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ), is the highest mountain above sea level in the world.

Etymology

The English name Mount Everest was given by the Royal Geographical Society in 1865, as a tribute to Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. The Tibetan name, Chomolungma, means "Goddess Mother of the World" or "Goddess of the Valley". The Nepali name, Sagarmatha, means "Forehead (or Goddess) of the Sky".
