Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation (pronunciation: /ˈmʌɪn(d)f(ʊ)lnəs ˌmɛdɪˈteɪʃ(ə)n/) is a meditation technique that involves focusing one's mind on the present moment. It is a form of meditation that has been practiced for thousands of years and has roots in Buddhist traditions, but has gained widespread popularity in recent years due to its potential benefits for mental and physical health.

Etymology

The term "mindfulness" is a translation of the Pali word sati, which is a significant element of some Buddhist traditions. The term "meditation" comes from the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning "contemplation."

Practice

Mindfulness meditation involves sitting in a comfortable position and focusing on your breath, allowing your attention to be fully absorbed by the sensation of breathing. The goal is not to control or suppress thoughts, but to observe them without judgment. When the mind wanders, the practitioner gently brings the attention back to the breath.
