Microangiography (pronounced: mi-cro-an-gee-og-rah-fee) is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the microvasculature within the body. The term is derived from the Greek words 'micros' meaning small, 'angeion' meaning vessel, and 'graphein' meaning to write or record.

Definition

Microangiography is a type of angiography that uses a special dye and camera to show the blood flow in the microcirculation. It is primarily used in research to study the smallest blood vessels in the body, which are less than 100 micrometers in diameter.

Procedure

The procedure involves the injection of a contrast agent into the blood vessels, followed by X-ray imaging. The contrast agent helps to highlight the blood vessels on the X-ray images. The images can then be analyzed to assess the health and function of the microvasculature.

Applications

Microangiography is used in various fields of medicine, including cardiology, neurology, and oncology. In cardiology, it can be used to study the blood vessels of the heart and detect conditions such as microvascular angina. In neurology, it can be used to visualize the blood vessels in the brain and detect conditions such as microvascular ischemic disease. In oncology, it can be used to study the blood supply to tumors.
