Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome (muh-TAB-uh-lik SIN-drohm), also known as Syndrome X or Insulin Resistance Syndrome, is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Etymology

The term "Metabolic Syndrome" comes from the Greek word metabole, meaning change, and the Latin word syndroma, meaning concurrence of symptoms. It was first identified as a distinct medical condition in the 1980s.

Conditions

  • High Blood Pressure (HYE blud PRAY-shur): A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. It's often linked to unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and obesity.
  • High Blood Sugar (HYE blud SHOO-gur): Also known as hyperglycemia, it's a condition characterized by an excessively high level of sugar in the blood. It's most commonly associated with diabetes.
  • Excess Body Fat around the Waist (EKS-es BOD-ee fat uh-ROWND the WAYST): This refers to the accumulation of visceral fat, which is located in the abdominal cavity and is associated with increased health risks.
  • Abnormal Cholesterol Levels (uh-NOR-muhl kuh-LES-ter-ol LEV-uhls): This refers to high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol, or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol.
  • High Triglyceride Levels (HYE try-GLIS-uh-ryd LEV-uhls): Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood. High levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

Related Terms

  • Insulin Resistance (IN-suh-lin ree-ZIS-tuhns): A condition in which the body's cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into cells.
  • Heart Disease (HART dih-ZEEZ): A range of conditions that affect the heart, including blood vessel diseases, heart rhythm problems, and heart defects.
  • Stroke (STROHK): A medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death.
  • Type 2 Diabetes (TYEP TOO DY-uh-BEE-teez): A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).
