Maffucci Syndrome - (pronounced) (muh-FOO-chee SIN-drome) A very rare condition affecting the skin and cartilage. It is characterized by benign (noncancerous) cartilage growths in the bones. These growths usually appear in the hands or feet, but can also appear in the skull, ribs, and spine. They can cause severely deformed bones, shortening of the arms or legs, broken bones, and other bone problems. Maffucci syndrome is also characterized by hemangiomas (benign blood vessel tumors), most commonly in the skin. People with this syndrome have an increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as chondrosarcoma (cancer that forms in bone cartilage) or ovarian or liver cancer. Maffucci syndrome is most common in young children
