Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ)

Kannada (pronounced: [ˈkʌnːəɖɑː]; Kannaḍa), is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by the people of Karnataka in the southwestern region of India. The language has roughly 44 million native speakers, who are called Kannadigas.

Etymology

The term Kannada is derived from Karnāṭa, the name of a historical region that roughly corresponds to the modern Indian state of Karnataka. The exact etymology of Karnāṭa is uncertain, but it is generally agreed that the term is a compound of karu (elevated) and nāṭa (country), thus meaning "high country".
