Johns Hopkins University (pronunciation: /dʒɒnz ˈhɒpkɪnz/; etymology: named after philanthropist Johns Hopkins) is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1876, the university was named for its first benefactor, the American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins.

History

The university was founded using a $7 million bequest—then the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the United States—from Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore merchant. The university, along with the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which opened in 1889, were created for the betterment of healthcare and medical research.
