Intraventricular Block

Intraventricular block (pronounced: in-tra-ven-TRIK-yoo-lar blok) is a medical condition that involves the interruption or delay in the electrical conduction within the ventricles of the heart. This condition can be classified into different types, including right bundle branch block (RBBB), left bundle branch block (LBBB), and bifascicular block.

Etymology

The term "intraventricular block" is derived from the Latin words "intra" meaning within, "ventriculus" meaning small belly or cavity, and the English word "block" which refers to an obstruction or hindrance.

Types of Intraventricular Block

  • Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB): This occurs when the electrical signal is delayed or blocked along the pathway to the right ventricle.
  • Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB): This happens when the electrical signal is delayed or blocked along the pathway to the left ventricle.
  • Bifascicular Block: This is a block in two of the three fascicles of the His-Purkinje system. It can be a combination of RBBB and left anterior fascicular block or RBBB and left posterior fascicular block.

Symptoms

Symptoms of intraventricular block may vary depending on the type and severity of the block. Some people may not experience any symptoms, while others may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting.

Diagnosis

Intraventricular block is typically diagnosed through an electrocardiogram (ECG), which records the electrical activity of the heart.

Treatment

Treatment for intraventricular block depends on the type and severity of the block, as well as the presence of any underlying conditions. Treatment options may include medication, pacemaker implantation, or cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
