Intraocular Lymphoma

Intraocular lymphoma (pronounced: in-trah-ock-you-lar lim-fo-ma) is a rare form of cancer that primarily affects the eye. It is a subtype of central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma and is also known as retinal lymphoma or vitreoretinal lymphoma.

Etymology

The term "Intraocular" is derived from the Latin words 'intra' meaning 'within' and 'oculus' meaning 'eye'. "Lymphoma" comes from the Greek words 'lympho' meaning 'lymph' and 'oma' meaning 'tumor'.

Definition

Intraocular lymphoma is a type of malignant tumor that originates in the lymphatic cells present in the eye. It primarily affects the retina and vitreous, but can also involve the optic nerve, choroid, and other parts of the eye.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of intraocular lymphoma include decreased vision, floaters, redness of the eye, and eye pain. However, these symptoms are not specific to intraocular lymphoma and can be seen in other eye conditions as well.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma is challenging due to its rarity and non-specific symptoms. It often requires a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies, and laboratory tests. A definitive diagnosis is usually made by biopsy of the affected eye tissue.

Treatment

Treatment options for intraocular lymphoma include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and in some cases, surgical removal of the eye (enucleation). The choice of treatment depends on the extent of the disease and the patient's overall health.

Prognosis

The prognosis of intraocular lymphoma varies widely and depends on several factors including the type of lymphoma, the extent of the disease, and the patient's response to treatment.
