Intelligence (/ɪnˈtɛlɪdʒəns/) is the ability to perceive, understand, and use knowledge to adapt to new situations, comprehend complex ideas, learn from experience, and engage in various forms of reasoning.

The term "intelligence" is derived from the Latin intelligere which means "to understand" or "comprehend".

Definition

Intelligence is a complex mental capability that involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Rather, it reflects a broader and deeper capability for comprehending our surroundings.

Types of Intelligence

There are several types of intelligence, including but not limited to:

  • Fluid Intelligence: The ability to think and reason abstractly and solve problems. This ability is considered independent of learning, experience, and education.
  • Crystallized Intelligence: The ability to use skills, knowledge, and experience. It does not equate to memory, but it does rely on accessing information from long-term memory.
  • Emotional Intelligence: The ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.
