Infodemiology

Infodemiology (pronounced: in-foh-dee-mee-ol-uh-jee) is a term that was coined to describe the science of distribution and determinants of information in an electronic medium, specifically the Internet, or in a population, with the ultimate aim to inform public health and public policy. The term is a blend of "information" and "epidemiology".

Etymology

The term "Infodemiology" is a portmanteau of "information" and "epidemiology". It was first used by Gunther Eysenbach in 2002 to describe a new research discipline and methodology studying the determinants and distribution of health information and misinformation disseminated via the internet.

Definition

Infodemiology can be defined as the study of the determinants and distribution of health information and misinformation. This includes both the analysis of information spread and content, as well as the social processes and effects related to it. Infodemiology data can be used for public health and policy to inform and influence decision-making.
