Hypermagnesemia (pronounced: hi-per-mag-ne-see-me-uh) is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally high concentration of magnesium in the blood.

Etymology

The term "Hypermagnesemia" is derived from the Greek words "hyper" meaning over, "magnes" referring to magnesium, and "emia" meaning condition of the blood.

Definition

Hypermagnesemia is defined as a serum magnesium concentration greater than 2.6 mg/dL (1.07 mmol/L). It is a relatively rare condition, often caused by excessive intake of magnesium from dietary supplements or medications, and less commonly, from foods that are naturally high in magnesium.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hypermagnesemia can range from mild to severe and may include nausea, vomiting, flushing, hypotension, bradycardia, lethargy, respiratory depression, coma, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of hypermagnesemia is typically made through a blood test that measures the level of magnesium in the blood. Other tests may be performed to determine the underlying cause of the condition and to assess the severity of symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment for hypermagnesemia typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition. This may include discontinuing the use of magnesium-containing supplements or medications, increasing the excretion of magnesium through the use of diuretics, or in severe cases, dialysis may be required.
