Etymology
The term "Gram" in "Gram stain" is derived from Hans Christian Gram's last name, which in turn is of Germanic origin, meaning "fierce" or "bold".
Biography
Hans Christian Gram was born on September 13, 1853, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied at the University of Copenhagen and was a professor of Pharmacology, and later a professor of Pathology at the same university. He published his staining technique in 1884 while working in the morgue of a Berlin hospital.
Gram Stain
The Gram stain is a method of staining used in microbiology to differentiate bacterial species into two large groups (Gram-positive and Gram-negative). The name comes from its inventor, Hans Christian Gram.
