Goblet Cells

Goblet cells (pronunciation: /ˈɡɒblɪt sɛlz/) are specialized epithelial cells that secrete mucus (a thick protective fluid) lining the respiratory and digestive tract. The term "goblet" refers to these cells' cup-like shape, similar to a wine goblet.

Etymology

The term "goblet cell" was coined due to the cell's resemblance to a goblet, a type of drinking vessel. The word "goblet" comes from the Old French gobelet, a diminutive of gobe, meaning "cup". The term "cell" comes from the Latin cella, meaning "small room".

Function

Goblet cells are responsible for producing and maintaining a protective mucus barrier against microbial invasion and mechanical damage in the respiratory tract, digestive tract, and other mucous membranes. They also aid in the movement of particles out of the respiratory tract through a process known as mucociliary clearance.
