Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan (pronunciation: /ˈɡɪlɡɪt bɔːltɪˈstɑːn/) is an administrative territory of Pakistan that borders the Afghanistan province of Badakhshan to the north, China to the northeast, the Pakistani administratively controlled state of Azad Kashmir to the south, and the Indian administratively controlled union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir to the southeast and southwest respectively.

Etymology

The name "Gilgit-Baltistan" is a combination of the names of its two main regions: Gilgit and Baltistan. The name "Gilgit" comes from the word "Gilit" or "Sargin-Gilit", which means "the area watered by the Gilgit River". The name "Baltistan" is derived from "Balti-yul", where "yul" means "homeland" or "settlement" in the Tibetan language, and "Balti" refers to the people living in the region.
