Giant Condyloma Acuminatum

Giant Condyloma Acuminatum (pronunciation: jai-ant kon-di-lo-ma ak-yu-mi-na-tum), also known as Buschke-Lowenstein Tumor or Verrucous Carcinoma, is a rare and aggressive variant of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection that primarily affects the anogenital region.

Etymology

The term "condyloma" is derived from the Greek words "kondylos", meaning "knob", and "oma", meaning "tumor". "Acuminatum" is a Latin term that means "pointed" or "tapering". The term "giant" is used to describe the large size of these tumors, which can reach several centimeters in diameter.

Definition

Giant Condyloma Acuminatum is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly types 6 and 11. It is characterized by the growth of large, cauliflower-like warts in the anogenital region. Despite its benign histological appearance, the tumor can be locally aggressive and destructive.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Giant Condyloma Acuminatum include large, cauliflower-like growths in the anogenital region, pain, bleeding, and foul-smelling discharge. In severe cases, the tumor can cause urinary or fecal obstruction.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Giant Condyloma Acuminatum is based on clinical examination, histopathological examination of the tumor, and detection of HPV DNA in the tumor tissue.

Treatment

Treatment of Giant Condyloma Acuminatum involves surgical removal of the tumor, followed by antiviral therapy to prevent recurrence. In some cases, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be used.

Prognosis

The prognosis of Giant Condyloma Acuminatum is generally good if the tumor is detected and treated early. However, the tumor can recur and may progress to Squamous Cell Carcinoma if left untreated.
