Frenuloplasty

Frenuloplasty (pronounced: /frɛnjuːlɒplæsti/) is a surgical procedure performed to alter the frenulum, a small fold of tissue that prevents an organ in the body from moving too far. It can refer to frenula in several places on the human body. It is related to frenectomy, a removal of the frenulum.

Etymology

The term "Frenuloplasty" is derived from the Latin word "frenulum" which means a small bridle and the Greek word "plastikē" which means the art of modelling or sculpting.

Procedure

Frenuloplasty involves the surgical alteration of a frenulum when it is too short or tight (a condition known as Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie). The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and involves making an incision in the frenulum to release the tension. The wound is then stitched up using absorbable sutures.

Types

There are several types of Frenuloplasty, depending on the location of the frenulum:

  • Lingual Frenuloplasty: This procedure is performed on the frenulum of the tongue. It is often performed in cases of ankyloglossia, where the frenulum is too short and restricts tongue movement.
  • Labial Frenuloplasty: This procedure is performed on the frenulum of the lips. It is often performed in cases where the frenulum is causing a gap between the front teeth or causing gum recession.
  • Penile Frenuloplasty: This procedure is performed on the frenulum of the penis. It is often performed in cases where the frenulum is too short and causes discomfort or pain.

Related Terms

  • Frenectomy: The removal of a frenulum.
  • Frenulum: A small fold of tissue that restricts the movement of an organ.
  • Ankyloglossia: A condition where the frenulum of the tongue is too short, causing restricted movement.
