Frank H. Netter

Frank H. Netter (pronounced /ˈfræŋk ˈɛtər/; 25 April 1906 – 17 September 1991) was an American surgeon and medical illustrator. The first edition of the Atlas of Human Anatomy — his "medical Mona Lisa" — was published in 1989; it is now in its 7th edition.

Etymology

The name "Frank" is of Germanic origin, and is used in English and other Germanic languages. The meaning of the name is "free man" or "truth". "Netter" is a surname of German origin, which means "net maker".

Biography

Frank H. Netter was born in New York City in 1906. He studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design before entering medical school at New York University, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1931. During his student years, he produced highly polished anatomy illustrations, both for his own use and for other students.

In the 1930s, Netter's work attracted the attention of the Ciba Pharmaceutical Company, now Novartis. Netter then began to create illustrations for Ciba, a collaboration that continued for many years. During his lifetime, he produced over 4,000 images, which have been included in countless publications worldwide.

Legacy

Netter's works are among the finest examples of the use of illustration in the teaching of medical concepts. The 13-book collection of his incredibly detailed work, The Ciba Collection of Medical Illustrations, is widely regarded as a classic example of medical and artistic collaboration.

Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy is one of the most famous medical works ever published. The atlas is used by nearly every medical and nursing student in the world and has been translated into multiple languages.
