The name "Francesco" is of Italian origin, derived from the Latin "Franciscus," meaning "Frenchman." The surname "Redi" is also of Italian origin, but its exact etymology is unknown.

Life and Work

Francesco Redi was born in Arezzo, Italy, and studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Pisa. He became the personal physician to the Medici family, who were the rulers of Tuscany at the time.

Redi is best known for his series of experiments in 1668 that refuted the then widely held belief in spontaneous generation. This belief held that living organisms could arise spontaneously from nonliving matter. Redi demonstrated that maggots come from eggs of flies, providing early evidence supporting the concept of biogenesis.
