Flab (/flæb/), is a colloquial term often used to describe excess body fat, particularly in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and arms. The term is not used in a formal medical context, but is commonly understood in everyday language.

Etymology

The term "flab" is believed to have originated in the early 20th century, derived from the longer word "flabby" which dates back to the 18th century. "Flabby" itself is thought to have come from the word "flap", with the 'by' suffix added to denote a characteristic of something, in this case, the characteristic of being like a flap.
