The Fire services in France (French: Service d'incendie et de secours; pronunciation: /sɛʁ.vis dɛ̃.sɛ̃.di e də sy.kuʁ/; etymology: Service - "service", d'incendie - "of fire", et de secours - "and rescue") are a network of professional, municipal, and volunteer fire departments that provide fire protection and emergency medical services throughout the country of France.

History

The origins of the Fire services in France can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when the first organized groups of firefighters, known as "pompiers", were established in major French cities. The term "pompiers" (pronunciation: /pɔ̃.pje/; etymology: derived from the French word pompe - "pump") refers to the manual water pumps that were used to extinguish fires.

Organization
