Fen (medicine)

Fen (/fɛn/), in the field of medicine, often refers to a type of drug used in the treatment of obesity. The term is derived from the Greek word "φαίνω" (phainō), meaning "to show" or "to appear".

Etymology

The term "Fen" is an abbreviation of the drug Fenfluramine, which was commonly used in the combination drug therapy Fen-Phen. Fenfluramine is derived from the Greek words "φαίνω" (phainō), meaning "to show" or "to appear", and "φλούρα" (floura), meaning "flour". This is in reference to the drug's use in reducing body weight, thus "showing" or "revealing" a thinner physique.

Usage

Fen, or Fenfluramine, was used as an appetite suppressant in the treatment of obesity. It was often prescribed in combination with Phentermine, a stimulant, in a treatment known as Fen-Phen. However, due to serious side effects, Fenfluramine was withdrawn from the market in 1997.
