Etonogestrel

Etonogestrel (pronounced: eh-toh-noh-JES-trel) is a type of progestin, which is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. It is used in various forms of contraceptive methods, including the contraceptive implant and the vaginal ring.

Etymology

The term "Etonogestrel" is derived from the chemical structure of the compound, which is a 19-nortestosterone derivative. The prefix "Eto-" is derived from the chemical name "ethinyl", referring to the ethinyl group present in the molecule. The "-gestrel" suffix is common in synthetic progestins and is derived from the word "gestation", referring to the hormone's role in pregnancy.

Usage

Etonogestrel is primarily used as a contraceptive. It works by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and changing the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.

It is the active ingredient in the contraceptive implant Nexplanon and the vaginal ring NuvaRing, both of which release a steady dose of etonogestrel to provide long-term contraception.
