Estivation

Estivation (pronounced: es-ti-va-tion), also known as aestivation, is a state of animal dormancy, similar to hibernation, characterized by inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate, that is entered in response to high temperatures and arid conditions. It takes place during the summer months in certain species.

Etymology

The term "estivation" is derived from the Latin aestas, which means 'summer'. It is used to describe the long-term dormancy of an animal during hot or dry periods.
