Eli Lilly and Company (pronounced /ˈiːlaɪ ˈlɪliː ænd ˈkʌmpəni/) is an American pharmaceutical company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, with offices in 18 countries. Its products are sold in approximately 125 countries. The company was founded in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical chemist and veteran of the American Civil War, after whom the company was named.

Etymology

The company is named after its founder, Colonel Eli Lilly. The name "Lilly" is of English origin and is a diminutive form of "Lillian" or "Lilium". The company's name reflects its founder's commitment to the production and distribution of the highest quality pharmaceutical products.

History

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876, and was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to produce human insulin using recombinant DNA including Humulin (insulin medication), Humalog (insulin lispro), and the first approved biosimilar insulin product in the US. Lilly also developed the first antidepressant Prozac (fluoxetine).
