East Africa (pronunciation: /ˈiːst ˈæfrɪkə/)

East Africa, or Eastern Africa, is the eastern region of the African continent, variably defined by geography or geopolitics. In the United Nations Statistics Division scheme of geographic regions, 20 territories constitute Eastern Africa.

Etymology

The term East Africa is believed to have been coined by European explorers who traveled to this part of the world during the early parts of the 19th century. The term is used to describe the region that lies to the east of Central Africa.
