Dreamtime (/ˈdriːmtaɪm/), also known as The Dreaming, is a cultural, spiritual, and philosophical concept derived from the indigenous Aboriginal Australian people.

Etymology

The term "Dreamtime" is a translation of the Arrernte word "altyerre" or "altyerre", which refers to the time of creation and ancestral beings. The term was first used in the early 20th century by anthropologists to describe Aboriginal spiritual beliefs.

Definition

Dreamtime refers to the Aboriginal understanding of the world, of its creation, and its great stories. It is the Aboriginal understanding of the past, present, and future. It is a complex network of knowledge, faith, and practices that derive from stories of creation. It pervades all aspects of life and influences the laws, behavior, and ceremonies of the Aboriginal people.
