Dream Interpretation

Dream interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to dreams. In many ancient societies, such as those of Egypt and Greece, dreaming was considered a supernatural communication or a means of divine intervention, whose message could be interpreted by people with these associated spiritual powers.

Pronunciation

/driːm ˌɪntərprɪˈteɪʃən/

Etymology

The term "dream interpretation" is derived from the Latin interpretatio (explanation) and the Old English dream (vision, dream).

History

Dream interpretation dates back to 3000-4000 B.C, where they were documented on clay tablets. For as long as we have been able to talk about our dreams, we have been fascinated with them and have strived to understand them. In some primal societies, members were unable to distinguish between the dream world and the waking world. Or they could simply choose not to make the distinction. They saw that the dream world was not only an extension of reality, but that it was a more powerful world.

Interpretation

In the interpretation of dreams, it is important to differentiate between psychological and spiritual interpretations. Psychological interpretations, such as those offered by Sigmund Freud, suggest that dreams are a reflection of repressed desires or unconscious thoughts. Spiritual interpretations, on the other hand, view dreams as messages from the divine, prophetic visions, or the soul's journey into the afterlife.
