The Dartos (pronunciation: /ˈdɑːrtoʊs/) is a smooth muscle layer found in the subcutaneous tissue of the scrotum and the labia majora. It is responsible for the wrinkling of the scrotal surface and helps in temperature regulation of the testes.
Etymology
The term 'Dartos' is derived from the Greek word 'dartoēs', which means 'skinned' or 'flayed'. This is in reference to the thin, sheet-like nature of the muscle layer.
Function
The primary function of the Dartos muscle is to regulate the temperature of the testes. It does this by contracting and relaxing in response to changes in ambient temperature. When the temperature is cold, the Dartos muscle contracts, causing the scrotum to become tight and wrinkled. This helps to bring the testes closer to the body for warmth. Conversely, when the temperature is warm, the Dartos muscle relaxes, allowing the scrotum to hang loosely and the testes to be farther from the body, helping to cool them.
