Danio rerio

Danio rerio (pronunciation: /ˈdæni.oʊ ˈrɛrioʊ/), commonly known as the Zebrafish, is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the minnow family (Cyprinidae) of the order Cypriniformes. Native to South Asia, it is a popular aquarium fish, frequently sold under the trade name zebra danio (and thus often called a "tropical fish" although both tropical and subtropical).

Etymology

The name "Danio" comes from the Bangla name dhani, meaning "of the rice field", while "rerio" is a Latin word meaning "stream". The common name, zebrafish, is derived from the distinctive horizontal blue stripes on the body.

Description

Adult zebrafish are small and elongated, typically about 2.5 cm to 4 cm long. They have a characteristic pattern of blue and silver stripes, which has earned them their common name. The body shape is fusiform and laterally compressed, with its mouth directed upwards.

Habitat and Distribution

Danio rerio is native to the streams of the southeastern Himalayas, including the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar. They are found in a variety of habitats, ranging from fast-flowing rivers to slow-moving, nearly stagnant ponds.

Use in Research

The zebrafish is a common and important model organism in scientific research. It is particularly notable for its regenerative abilities, and has been used in studies of wound healing and organ regeneration. It is also used in research into development, behaviour and gene function.
