Cone of light

The Cone of light (pronunciation: /koʊn ɒv laɪt/), also known as the light reflex, is a visible phenomenon observed during an otoscopy examination of the tympanic membrane or eardrum.

Etymology

The term "Cone of light" is derived from the conical shape of the light reflection observed on the eardrum. The term "light reflex" refers to the reflection of light from the otoscope.

Description

The Cone of light is a bright, triangular reflection observed in the anteroinferior quadrant of the tympanic membrane. It is caused by the reflection of light from the otoscope off the malleolar folds and the anterior and posterior malleolar striae. The apex of the cone points towards the umbo, the central depression of the eardrum where the malleus is attached.

Clinical significance

The presence, absence, or distortion of the Cone of light can provide important clues about the health of the ear. A normal Cone of light indicates a healthy, intact tympanic membrane. Absence or distortion of the Cone of light may suggest a variety of conditions, including otitis media, tympanic membrane perforation, or cholesteatoma.
