Computers
Computers (/kəmˈpjuːtər/) are electronic devices that manipulate information, or data. They have the ability to store, retrieve, and process data.
Etymology
The term "computer" comes from the word "compute", which means to calculate or reckon. The term was first used in the 17th century and referred to human beings who performed calculations or computations. The definition of computers was then broadened to include machines that do calculations.
History
The first mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine, was designed by Charles Babbage in the 19th century. This was followed by the development of electronic computers in the 20th century, which were much faster and more efficient.
Types of Computers
There are several types of computers including personal computers, which are used by individuals, and mainframe computers, which are used by large businesses. Other types include supercomputers, servers, and embedded computers.
Components of a Computer
A computer is made up of several components including the central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), and hard disk drive (HDD). Other components include the motherboard, graphics processing unit (GPU), and power supply unit (PSU).
Software
Computers run on software, which is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. There are two main types of software: system software, which includes the operating system and utilities, and application software, which includes programs that perform specific tasks.
