Complexion

Complexion (/kəmˈplɛkʃən/) refers to the natural color, texture, and appearance of the skin, especially on the face. The term is derived from the Latin word 'complexio', meaning 'combination', and was historically used to describe the balance of the four humors.

Types of Complexion

There are generally four types of complexions: fair or light, medium, olive, and dark or deep. Each type has unique characteristics and requires different skincare routines.

  • Fair or Light Complexion: This complexion type has the lightest skin tone and is often associated with people from Northern European countries. It is more susceptible to sunburn and skin damage.
  • Medium Complexion: This complexion type is slightly darker than a fair complexion and is common among people from Southern Europe and parts of Asia. It tans more easily than a fair complexion but can still burn.
  • Olive Complexion: This complexion type has a green or grey undertone and is common among people from the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. It tans easily and is less likely to burn.
  • Dark or Deep Complexion: This complexion type has the darkest skin tone and is common among people of African, Caribbean, and South Asian descent. It rarely burns and tans very easily.

Factors Influencing Complexion

Several factors can influence a person's complexion, including genetics, sun exposure, diet, and skincare routine. Certain medical conditions, such as Rosacea, Melasma, and Vitiligo, can also affect the complexion.
