Columbia University (pronounced kəˈlʌmbiə juːnɪˈvɜːrsɪti) is a private Ivy League research university in New York City. Established in 1754, it is the oldest institution of higher education in New York and the fifth-oldest in the United States.

Etymology

The university's name, "Columbia", is a reference to the Columbus, the European explorer who is credited with discovering America. The name was chosen to reflect the patriotic fervor that was prevalent in the United States at the time of the university's founding.
