Clitoromegaly (pronounced: kli-to-rom-e-ga-ly) is a medical term that refers to an abnormal enlargement of the clitoris. This condition is not the same as the normal enlargement of the clitoris seen during sexual arousal.

Etymology

The term "clitoromegaly" comes from the Greek words "kleitoris," meaning clitoris, and "megas," meaning large.

Causes

Clitoromegaly can be congenital or acquired. Congenital causes include disorders of sexual development such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), and certain forms of gonadal dysgenesis. Acquired causes can include the use of anabolic steroids, testosterone or other androgenic substances, or tumors or cysts of the clitoris.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of clitoromegaly is an enlarged clitoris. The size can vary from slightly larger than average to the size of a penis in severe cases. Other symptoms can include increased sensitivity, discomfort or pain, and changes in sexual function.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of clitoromegaly typically involves a physical examination and medical history. Additional tests may be needed to determine the underlying cause, such as blood tests to check hormone levels or imaging tests to look for tumors or cysts.

Treatment

Treatment for clitoromegaly depends on the underlying cause. If the enlargement is due to hormonal imbalances, hormone therapy may be recommended. In cases where the enlargement is causing discomfort or distress, surgery may be considered.
