Case Western Reserve University (pronounced: kās wĕst'ərn rĭ-zûrv' yōō'nə-vûr'sĭ-tē) is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio. The university was created in 1967 through the federation of two longstanding contiguous institutions: Western Reserve University, founded in 1826 and named for its location in the Connecticut Western Reserve, and Case Institute of Technology, founded in 1960 through the endowment of Leonard Case, Jr. Over time, the university has extended to additional campuses and facilities throughout Cleveland.

Etymology

The name "Case Western Reserve University" is a combination of the names of the two institutions that merged in 1967 to form the university. "Case" comes from the Case Institute of Technology, which was named after Leonard Case, Jr., a philanthropist who left his estate to establish the institute. "Western Reserve" refers to the Western Reserve University, named for its location in the Connecticut Western Reserve, an area in northeast Ohio that was originally reserved for Connecticut residents following the American Revolution.
