Cannabis strain

A Cannabis strain (/kænəbɪs streɪn/) is a specific variety of the Cannabis plant species. Cannabis strains are either pure or hybrid varieties of the plant genus Cannabis, which encompasses the species Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.

Etymology

The term "strain" in the context of biology is derived from the Latin word stirps, meaning "stock, lineage, or race". In the context of Cannabis, a strain refers to the plant's specific genetic makeup, including its growth characteristics, physical appearance, and the balance of active compounds it produces.

Types of Cannabis Strains

There are three primary types of Cannabis strains: Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis. Each strain has its unique characteristics and effects.

  • Cannabis sativa strains are known for their uplifting effects and are often used during the day. They are characterized by their tall growth habit and thin, pointed leaves.
  • Cannabis indica strains are known for their relaxing effects and are often used in the evening or at night. They are characterized by their short, bushy growth habit and broad leaves.
  • Cannabis ruderalis strains are less common and are primarily used in breeding auto-flowering strains. They are characterized by their small size and ability to flower without a change in light cycle.
